“We’re profitable.”
It’s one of the most reassuring statements a business can make.
But an equally important question is:
“Are we creating real economic value?”
Accounting profit is built on accounting standards, recognition principles, estimates, and assumptions. Economic reality, however, is influenced by factors that don’t always find a place in the financial statements changing business models, intangible assets, customer relationships, technology investments, and future growth potential.
This doesn’t mean accounting profit is misleading. It means it tells one part of the story.
As professionals, we need to look beyond the numbers in the financial statements. Understanding cash flows, business risks, market dynamics, and management’s long-term strategy often provides a more complete picture of an organisation’s performance than profit alone.
Financial statements remain the foundation of decision-making. But the best decisions are made when accounting numbers are interpreted alongside business reality.
