Few founders leave as lasting a legacy as the late Mr. Tilak Raj Chadha. In addition to his professional success, his journey was influenced by his extraordinary fortitude and strong desire to help others.
Mr. Chadha was born into an uncertain era, when chartered accountancy was just getting started and India was on the verge of independence. He had to overcome obstacles that would have intimidated most people. The field was still in its infancy, regulations were changing, and confidence in financial management was still growing. But where others saw only barriers, he saw opportunity.
Before partition, Mr. Chadha began his practice in Lahore in 1946, but the turmoil of those years completely upended his world. He decided to rebuild instead of give up.
He picked himself up by 1948 and went back to work in a newly independent India, establishing the groundwork for a trusted name in the field of Accounting. After setting up the firm in Delhi in 1948, it steadily progressed and flourished under Mr. T.R. Chadha’s leadership, over the next five decades becoming one of India’s trusted chartered accountancy firms, renowned for its professional standards and client satisfaction.
His proficiency in direct taxation distinguished him not only for his technical proficiency but also for his commitment to precision and the welfare of his clients. By sharing his knowledge through study groups and influencing the evolution of tax practices in India, he did more than just work within the system; he helped shape it. He was also elected as Chairman of Northern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
However, Mr. Chadha’s influence extended beyond the realm of business. He was elected as Distinguished Governor for LIONS International in early 1970s. His motto “Service Above Self” always reflected not only in his relationships with clients but also with all employees.
Mr. T R Chadha’s work in charity and philanthropy, quietly conducted throughout his life, touched many lives and set a remarkable example of giving back to society. His leadership, compassion and principles were the cornerstone of the firm.
We celebrate Mr. Tilak Raj Chadha today as a leader as well as a founder. His legacy endures in every encounter, serving as a constant reminder to always put others before ourselves, serve with integrity, and aim for excellence. We are still motivated to aim higher and create a future that is commensurate with his extraordinary example by his story.

1946 – Foundation in Lahore
Late Shri T.R. Chadha began his practice in Lahore, marking the start of the firm’s professional journey.
1948 – Re-establishment in Delhi
Following Partition, the firm was re-established in Delhi, laying the groundwork for a trusted practice in independent India.
1950–1960 – Growth in Assurance and Taxation
The firm expanded its work in statutory audits and taxation, steadily building long-term client relationships.
1970 – Recognition in the Profession
Mr. T.R. Chadha was elected Chairman of the Northern India Regional Council of ICAI, contributing actively to the profession’s development.
1980–1990– Diversification and Expansion
The firm diversified its services into advisory and risk areas, strengthening its position as a multidisciplinary practice.
2000 – National Presence
With new offices across India, the firm grew into a pan-India practice, supported by structured teams and specialized expertise.
2010 – Strengthening Governance & Compliance
Focus expanded to include governance, risk management, and regulatory advisory, aligning with evolving client needs.
Present – 79+ Years of Professional Service
Today, T R Chadha & Co LLP operates with 24 partners and over 1,000 professionals across 11 locations, continuing its journey with integrity, independence, and responsibility.
